Murray McLauchlan began writing songs and performing them in his
late teens at music festivals and clubs such as Yorkville's "Riverboat"
in the 60's. He has grown to become a Canadian music icon. Now, Murray
has 18 albums to his credit and has won 11 JUNO Awards, 5 RPM Awards, and
a few Toronto Music Awards. In 1993, the federal government recognized
his exemplary contribution to Canadian culture and music by awarding him
The Order of Canada.
Murray is well known for his support of Canadian song writers. He hosted
the national CBC radio programme "Swinging on a Star*' for 5 years drawing
over a quarter million listeners every Saturday focusing on new and established
Canadian writers. An active pilot, he hosted his own TV special "Floating
Over Canada" in which he piloted a Cessna 185 float plane around
the entire country of Canada. For several year running CBC has rebroadcast
this program on Canada Day.
